Eau Claire ice anglers share tips to stay warm

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Extreme cold temperatures keep some people inside, but for some, it's a reason to head outdoors.

It's the season for ice fishing, and no matter the temperature, anglers were out on the ice. With temperatures hovering around zero on Friday, inefficient cold-weather gear could result in frostbite or hypothermia. That's why News 18 turned to the experts, the anglers themselves, for tips on how to stay warm while waiting for their catch.

"Bring an ice shack. If you don't have an ice shack, you know, move around. Hop hole-to-hole," said Richard Helland of Eau Claire, "If you're just tip-up fishing like I am, if you don't have a shack, just walk around. You pretty much just got to stay moving. Get the blood flowing, you know?"

Ice anglers on Half Moon Lake told News 18 the hands are the hardest part of the body to keep warm. They say portable heaters and hand warmers, along with thick gloves can keep hands safe from the dangers of exposure to extremely cold temperatures.
