Beloit Fire proud to fly flag now in South Korea for Olympics

BELOIT (WKOW) -- Just days before the Olympic opening ceremony takes centerstage and Rock County has reason to be proud.  Beloit Firefighters are helping 'Old Glory' fly high over Team USA and the games in South Korea.

"Just kept watching for it, then all of sudden it showed up at headquarters in a nice box ready to go," Beloit Fire Lt. Jeremy Flanagan said.  He says the department learned about the opportunity back in the fall when he spoke with an honor guard member in an Illinois chapter.

"Yeah, it was pretty cool," he said.

Beloit was chosen as the only agency in Wisconsin to fly the flag.  Lt. Flanagan says it wasn't for long.  Just a few moments because they needed to take photos and get it on its way.

"It was like a relay," he said.  "It was really interesting to know we had it here...and then on a dog sled going through Alaska to get some of its final destinations," he added.

The opportunity gave Beloit a chance to show off the city.

"Beloit is trying to improve its image and be the best city that it can, and for Beloit to represent Wisconsin with this flag in my mind I think its huge," he said.

The flag was one of four sent across the country.  It was given to the Skeleton Team USA Bobsled racers.  The team took the flag to South Korea and Lt. Flanagan has heard it is a precious keepsake the team treasures.
