Spike in thefts from vehicles in Dane County

DANE COUNTY (WKOW) -- The Dane County Sheriff's Office are warning about the thefts from cars over the past couple of weeks.

It includes the villages of Deerfield and Cambridge and the town of Albion. Authorities say almost all of the cars were left unlocked, except in the case where a window was smashed.

Whoever is responsible for the thefts is taking cash or other items left out in the open.

"A lot of people who have maybe lived in small towns or rural areas their whole life aren't used to locking their doors at night," said Elise Schaffer, Dane County Sheriff's Office spokesperson.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office says you should always lock your car and put away your belongings. Deputies say if you see something that looks suspicious, try to get a description of the person or car they are in and call police.
