Report: Drowsy driving plays big role in national accident average

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- A study released by AAA this morning shows drowsy driving plays a role in almost eight times more severe accidents than federal estimates suggest.

The study found drowsy driving plays a role in nine percent of all crashes, and 10.8 percent of severe crashes.

Drowsy driving is determined by the amount of time a driver's eyes were closed before a crash.

Federal estimates only have drowsiness as a factor in about one or two percent of crashes.

In the study -- 29 percent of those surveyed admitted to having trouble keeping their eyes open while driving in the past month.

You may think things like drinking coffee or rolling down the windows might help combat drowsiness while driving, but AAA says their study shows those things really don't help.
