Family of woman killed in I-90/94 crash warns drivers of dangerous conditions

WISCONSIN DELLS (WKOW) -- The family of a Wisconsin Dells mother, killed in a crash Saturday, is talking about the horrific ordeal.  It happened on an on-ramp from Highway 12 to I-90, when a driver lost control near Lake Delton.

"She took a route she normally doesn't take, just thinking the highways would be clear," Mary Schimming's son Derek said about how the day began.  His mother was on her way into work at the Polynesian Resort.  Her daughter says she had just bought donuts for her co-workers and was in good spirits.

"Things happen and sometimes it hurts you really bad," Daughter Jennifer Avcialp said.

Schimming's grown children know the pain of the loss.

"People need to slow down," Avcialp said.  "The speed of the impact was life, you know it was life..it caused the accident in seconds she was gone," she said.

The family also feels heartache for Lake Delton firefighter Joe Sabol.  He was hit while helping move traffic from the crash-site.

"Same for the firefighter like God Bless him," Avcialp said.  "For him to get injured, it broke my heart... but i'm happy that no one else has to go through the pain with this loss."

The family is coping with keepsakes Schimming had sent to her kids.  A package arrived for her daughter the day her mother was killed.  It contained a voice recorded book full of memories of the year gone by.  In Schimming's car, she had another care package she was soon to send out to Turkey to her daughter's home.  It featured lots of cards for the year ahead.

"For the next holidays, birthdays, this was her alive, she didn't know what was coming," Avcialp said.

Now her son just has this message for anyone driving in the winter weather.

"We just need to take our time so that we can get to where we need to go to see our loved ones again."
