La Crescent, MN (WXOW) -
One person is rescued from a burning La Crescent home Friday evening thanks to the help from a person who just happened to be driving by at the time.
Cathy Thompson was driving past 1234 County Highway 25 around 7 p.m. when she saw flames coming from the home. She stopped, and after calling 9-1-1, went to the home, knocked on the door and pounded on the windows.
At first, Thompson said she wasn't getting any response, but eventually the homeowner, Jane Reget, who was sleeping at the time, awakened. They were then able to get away from the home safely.
John Reget was at a local diner when the fire broke out, and returned home as soon as he received notification.
Reget tells WXOW that the fire started in the attached garage, but isn't sure yet how it started.
Pictures shared from those who live around the home show a large wall of flames coming from the garage area of the home.
Despite the large flames, the La Crescent Fire Department was able to contain the fire to the garage area.
Assistant La Crescent Fire Chief Shawn Wetterlin said it may be a few days before they can complete their investigation into what caused the fire.
He called Thompson is a hero for her efforts.
Reget said although she and Thompson are neighbors, they didn't know each other until Friday night. Kathy said that once the Reget couple is back on their feet, they'll go out for coffee together.
The couple will stay with family for the time being.
