MADISON (WKOW) --- It was an unexpected three-day weekend for local kids Friday. With Madison-area schools closed due to the snow, some parents were left scrambling to find activities for their kids.

Many took advantage of the extra time off to enjoy themselves at the 1st annual Snow Glow at Elver Park.

“No school, no problem. It's nice when we get this much snow,” said Jason Speich, who was enjoying the day with his young daughter Ivy.

“It's fun when there's no school,” Ivy said.

Madison Parks Foundation teamed with Madison Parks for a day of winter activities, which included sledding, skiing and skating.

“People learn to snow shoe, learned to ski and learned to track critters. And then after that, there will be nighttime sledding,” Said Stephanie Franklin, executive director of the Madison Parks Foundation.

“Oh yeah. I've been to this hill before. This is a good time,” Speich said.

Eric Fritz took the day off from work -- so his son and his friends could get some quality time on the hill.

“I thought we'd go sledding all afternoon, but it's turn into playing on the snow. Just having a good time. The weather's been great. The sun's out. Beautiful,” Fritz said.

Members of the Madison Capitols hockey team also took advantage of a day off.

“We're going to try snowboarding here. First time ever, so we'll see how it goes,” said Jordyn Peterson

Even some four-legged friends were out having a good time.

“What a beautiful day and they're enjoying it. And it's great to be out in the parks,” Franklin said.

“This is what we need in Wisconsin,” Speich said.
