MADISON (WKOW) -- Fitchburg officials say a fireman is okay after he was evaluated at a hospital following an early morning fire on the city's northwest side.

Firefighters responded to a house in the 4000 block of Aztec Trail around 5:30 a.m.Saturday to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the basement.

Fitchburg Chief Joe Pulvermacher tells Channel 27 News the two people inside were able to get out all right, though one of the residents refused to be taken for further medical attention.

He says the cold weather and structural conditions, including access to portions of the home, prevented them breaking down the fire as quickly as they would have liked.

Pulvermacher also says people need to remember to clear their fire hydrants off so crews can get to a water connection.

The fire did not spread to any surrounding homes.

The Salvation Army and Madison Metro transit provided help for both the residents and firefighters at the scene. Chief Pulvermacher says it was good to have a place for the family to get out of the cold until Red Cross arrived. Firefighters also gathered on a bus to recoup from being out in the frigid temperatures.

The chief says crews from The Towns of Verona and Madison, the Madison and Oregon Fire Departments and an EMS team from Fitchrona also responded to the call.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation but officials says the property is likely to be a total loss.
