Paul Nehlen's Twitter account silenced after controversial tweets

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- If you follow Paul Ryan's republican challenger on Twitter, you've likely been missing his tweets today.  A check on Paul Nehlen's Twitter account  Sunday, @pnehlen, shows it is suspended.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says the action might have stemmed from a controversial tweet the candidate from Delavan made Friday regarding actress Meghan Markle, who's engaged to Prince Harry. The tweet superimposed Markle and the prince's photo with new DNA analysis of the re-created face of Cheddar Man, the first Briton from 10,000 years ago. Nehlen defended his actions in posted comments Saturday on his Facebook page:  "Paul Nehlen Lampooning the "Cheddar Man" fake science story, written and designed to dispossess Britons of their Whiteness is entirely appropriate."

The Washington Times reports the suspension may also have come after Nehlen's anti-Semitic tweets earlier this month. The candidate published comments on the Twitter account in which he listed his media critics and called their attacks on him  a Jewish conspiracy.  As WKOW reported , the Nehlen campaign defended the actions of releasing the names of the critics and their contact information.

On its Help page, the Twitter messaging platform offers the following reasons why an account can be suspended:

Abusive Tweets or behavior: We may suspend an account if it has been reported to us as violating our Rules surrounding abuse. When an account engages in abusive behavior, like sending threats to others or impersonating other accounts, we may suspend it temporarily or, in some cases, permanently.
