JEFFERSON (WKOW) --  The Fort Atkinson Fire Department says a young man died and another person was taken to the hospital after two separate snowmobile crashes Saturday night.

Division Chief Tom Gerondale tells Channel 27 News the first incident happened at 6:39 p.m. on County Road A / Advent Road in Sumner Township.  A news release from the Jefferson County Sheriff's office says their investigation shows the young man, who was 14 and from Jefferson, went off the trail after missing a curve.  Fellow riders as well as other snowmobilers who were passing by tried to help until emergency responders arrived, but he died at the scene.

The Daily Jefferson County Union reports the victim as being John Jaeckel, a freshman at Fort Atkinson High School.   Principal Dan Halvorsen says the counselors have been available Sunday at the school and will continue to be on hand Monday.

The Jefferson County Sheriffs and Medical Examiner's Offices, as well as the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, are investigating the accident.

Chief Gerondale says a second accident happened about 20 minutes later while crews were still dispatched to the first scene.  A call went out for mutual aid and responders from City of Jefferson EMSt went to the other location at N1599 Groeler Road, near the boat launch on the Rock River in the town of  Koshkonong.

He didn't know the name of the person or their age, but says they were taken to Fort Memorial Hospital in Ft.  Atkinson.  No further information was available about the person in the second crash.
