Madison West hoping to make a splash at state swim and dive meet

MADISON (WKOW) -

As the high school swim season progressed, Madison West junior Wes Jekel started to realize he could be a part of something special.

"Early on in the season, we were looking pretty good, and then we kind of realized we have a shot at this thing. So, it's really exciting coming up to state week."

The WIAA State Swim and Dive Meet will take place Friday and Saturday at the UW Natatorium. The Regents enter as one of the Division 1 favorites and are aiming their sights on claiming the team title.

"That's the goal," says head coach Bill Weaver. "We don't talk about it a lot. So, to some degree, it's unspoken, but everybody knows what we're here for."

Weaver has several standout swimmers on his squad. Jekel is the top qualifier in the 200 individual medley. He's also a top contender in the 100 backstroke. Henry Miller has the top qualifying time in the 100 yard breaststroke. Bill Weaver's son, Lain, is also a title hopeful in a couple events. Plus, the Regents have several strong relays.

"This is definitely the year that we have the biggest chance," Lain Weaver says about the state championship. "We have all the tools to do it. It's really pretty cool to see what happens at state."
