MADISON (WKOW) -- A long-time teacher at Madison East High School resigns following an investigation into allegations of inappropriate behavior brought to the school's attention by students.

East High Principal Michael Hernandez says accusations against physical education teacher Gary Calhoun surfaced on social media, and some were reported to school administrators.

One student who contacted 27 News this month maintained Calhoun had harassed her over her body image, and said she lodged a complaint with school officials.

Student accusations were first reported by The Capital Times.  The online newspaper reported some female students complained of Calhoun's proximity to them during certain gym class exercises.

"We take allegations very seriously," Madison Metropolitan School District spokesperson Rachel Strauch-Nelson wrote in a statement.   "When students brought these concerns to our attention, we followed our district protocol and asked the employee to stay home from work while we gather and review information. As we went through that process, Mr. Calhoun made the decision that he would not return to work."

"Given the sensitivity and impact of this issue on both the East Community and Mr. Calhoun, he opted not to return to work,"  Hernandez wrote in correspondence this week to school parents.

Calhoun had planned to retire at the end of the year, according to the district. He had been on staff at East High for more than two decades, and had served at one time as the school's baseball coach.  It is unclear if Calhoun's separation from the school qualifies as a retirement.

The newspaper reported a student lodged a complaint against Calhoun as far back as October, with school officials stating the concerns were examined at that time.

Calls to telephone numbers listed for Calhoun by 27 News seeking comment have yet to be returned.
