Jet engine cover rips off mid-air, passengers recount terrifying experience
HONOLULU, HI (WKOW) -- We're hearing from people who were on the United Airlines jet that lost an engine cover as they were flying from San Francisco to Hawaii.
The terrified passengers helplessly watched from their seats as pieces of their airplane flew off as they're high above the Pacific Ocean.
The pilots, taking no chances, ask for an immediate emergency landing
The crew told terrified passengers to brace for landing.
Michael Moniz was on the plane. "It was truly like being inside of a gigantic washing machine that had just had all of the towels moved to one side. It felt like the whole plane was going to shake apart."
The plane landed safely in Honolulu and was met by emergency vehicles, no one was injured
In a statement United says the emergency was due to "A loss of the engine cowling" and they praise their pilots for following safety protocol.
The FAA is now investigating
