PYEONGCHANG, SOUTH KOREA (WKOW) -- The U.S. Women's Hockey team has won gold at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
It came down to a shootout in the game against rival Canada. The 3-2 victory ended a 20 year drought since the women's last gold medal.
Nine current or former UW-Madison Badgers are part of this year's American and Canadian teams.
Four former Badgers are on Team USA. They are Meaghan Duggan, Brianna Decker, Alex Rigsby and Hillary Knight. Knight scored Team USA's first goal.
There are four former and one current Badger on the Canadian hockey team. Ann-Renee Desbiens, Meaghan Mikkelson, Blayre Turnbull, Sarah Nurse, Emily Clark and their teammates received the Olympic silver medal.
The U.S. victory was also 38 years to the day (February 22, 1980) since the men's famous "Miracle on Ice" victory over the Russians at Lake Placid.
"I can't put it into words," defenseman Kacey Bellamy said. "This whole year is for everyone that came before us. This is for Julie Chu (former USA team captain) and for all our families at home, the schools that we went to, everyone supporting us."
