Families gather at Capitol to oppose immigration bill

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- Families gathered at the Capitol Thursday to urge lawmakers to reject what they're referring to as an "anti-immigration bill."

Voces De La Frontera members held a lobby day during the Assembly's final session day.

The bill the group opposes would allow local law enforcement and public employees to interrogate, arrest, and deport immigrant community members, and require local authorities to comply with ICE detainer requests.

The group argues its unfair and cruel to separate families.

"Putting the blame on immigrants is misguided and misplaced. I decided I need to stick my neck out and say going to take a stand for what is right," said Nick Levendofsky of the Wisconsin Farmers Union.

The bill is not on the Assembly's calendar for Thursday. If the end their session at the end of the day, the bill will not make it to a vote.
