Madison Curling Club opens doors to new athletes as US men win gold

Posted: Updated:

McFARLAND (WKOW) -- The Madison Curling Club opened its doors Saturday to celebrate the U.S. Men's Curling Team's win and teach people more about the unique sport.

Just hours after the curling team won gold, people in McFarland came together to get a taste of what it's like to be an Olympian. The club's own Matt Hamilton is a member of the winning team.

Most of the people who attended the event at Madison Curling Club had never been out on the ice to curl. They learned to throw the rock, sweep and participate in a mini match.

Curling has become more popular, but when the club's instructors started it was very different.

"We didn't know because we were the first. So to see where we are now and how everyone knows this sport so well, it's just a tremendous feeling," said Lisa Shoeneberg, a 1998 Olympian.
