Little Hats, Big Hearts raises awareness for Congenital Heart Defects

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- A local teenager is celebrating American Heart Month by knitting and crocheting red hats for babies born in February.

Mount Horeb's Victoria Kalscheur participated in the Little Hats, Big Hearts campaign at St. Mary's Hospital.

The organization works to raise awareness, provide resources, and inspire moms to take their family's heart health to heart while raising awareness about Congenital Heart Defects.

The cause is especially close to Kalscheur's heart because her brother was born with Congenital Heart Disease.

Kalscheur has been knitting the hats since March 2017 and dropped them off Saturday morning.

Red hats are given out to thousands of babies to empower moms to live heart healthy lives and help their children do the same.

In the past 40 years there has been great improvement to the lives of those born with CHD.

"Some used to be considered universally fatal without any known treatments and now those kids are leading full, overall healthy lives with only mild limitations and seeing more and more of a normal life expectancy," said Pediatric Cardiologist, Andrea Rock.

Little Hats, Big Hearts received more than 200,000 hats for distribution this year.
