UPDATE (WKOW) -- Two people accused of running a phony check scam are both headed to trial.

Jason Edge and Shelly Scott both appeared in Dane County Court on Tuesday, where each was bound over for trial.

Authorities say Edge and Scott tried to pass a forged check at the Walmart in Monona. The two suspects are allegedly tied to a larger check fraud group that has defrauded stores in 14 states.

MONONA (WKOW) -- Police have arrested two people at the Monona Walmart who they suspect are part of multi-state check fraud ring.

Officers responded about 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018, to the Walmart located at 2151 Royal Ave. in Monona for two subjects that they say had attempted to pass a forged check.

Further investigation by police and Walmart Asset Protection led investigators to believe these suspects are part of a larger check fraud group that has defrauded Walmart stores over multiple states in the amount of approximately $700,000 to $1,000,000.

The two suspects, both from Missouri, were identified as Shelly A. Scott, 42, and Jason D. Edge, 44. Both subjects were taken into custody and booked into the Dane County Jail  and face charges of being party to the crimes of forgery, identity theft, possession of methamphetamine and possession of methamphetamine drug paraphernalia.  Additional charges are expected after notification of police agencies across the United States.

During the initial contact with the suspects, a false 911 call was made in an attempt to lure the investigating officers away from their stop.  It is believed an additional member, or members, of the group were in the immediate area acting as lookouts and to make the false call.
