Verona boys hockey returns to the WIAA state

Posted: Updated:

For the first time since winning it all in 2014, the Verona boys hockey team is back in the WIAA state tournament field.

"Nobody on this team has played in the state tournament," says head coach Joel Marshall. "Our last one, these guys were eighth-graders, our seniors were anyways. So, it's something new and fresh. "

The Wildcats are making their seventh state appearance. They'll face Notre Dame on Thursday in the quarterfinals. Despite a 20-3-3 record, Verona enters the tournament as something of an underdog.

"Everybody has the chance to beat because we're all pretty tight teams. So, I don't think we change the way we play too much," says junior Brockton Baker.

The Verona players saying they have nothing to lose this week at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

"Me personally, I think we have a lot of pressure off of us," says senior Garhett Kaegi. "We made it. So, now we're just going to play. Hopefully, do something big and bring it back to Verona."
