Mt. Horeb firefighters get ready for Fight for Air Climb next weekend

Posted: Updated:

MT. HOREB (WKOW) -- The American Lung Association is hosting it's 10th annual Fight for Air Climb fundraiser next weekend in Milwaukee.

Fire departments around the state, including some from Dane County, will climb the stairs of the US Bank building to raise money and awareness of the prevalence of conditions impacting lung health.

Mt. Horeb firefighters will climb 47 stories, or 1034 stairs next weekend at the fundraiser. Gary Haglund is captain of the department. He's been fighting fires for 37 years, but next weekend he and four others will be fighting for more. They want a cure to help millions of Americans impacted by COPD, lung cancer and other respiratory diseases.

Firefighters are especially impacted and there's a big push to protect them from inhaling carcinogens while on the job.

"Shout out to a co-worker who's fighting lung cancer right now," Haglund told 27 News. "This one's for her. I'm doing it for her."

Teams will be climbing the stairs of the US Bank building in Milwaukee with full gear on. More than 30 fire departments from southern Wisconsin also participate in a friendly competition to see who can get the fastest time.

Capt. Haglund's personal best is 11 minutes and 6 seconds to climb 1,034 stairs.
