DACA, Dreamers not giving up hope

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) --  Washington is not any closer to reaching a solution on DACA with Monday’s deadline looming. Congress has until midnight, but supporters in Wisconsin are not giving up hope.

It's been six months since President Trump made the move to end the DACA program that protects young undocumented immigrants from deportation. The deadline did not stop groups like the Centro Hispano of Dane County who gathered to stress the importance of keeping the policy in place.

DACA recipients and those who aim to protect dreamers say pushing lawmakers to reach a deal has been frustrating.

“We're never going to be tired of them being able to speak out and us supporting them along the way,: said Karen Menéndez Coller, Executive Director Centro Hispano.  “We're committed to do anything and everything to to ensure their hope is never lost and their families keep thinking of this American county as their own."

With the battle still in the courts dreamers are uncertain as ever about their future in America. The next government funding deadline is March 23rd and some lawmakers say they may try to use that package as a point of leverage to reach a deal on DACA.
