Dane County to build large solar farm near DCRA

Posted: Updated:

Dane County officials are moving forward with a plan to build a massive, new solar energy project.

The solar farm would be located just north of Dane County Regional Airport in Madison. It would become the second largest solar project in the state.

The plan calls for a large scale solar farm on 41 acres of airport land. It could generate as much as about 8 megawatts of power. That's enough to power about 1,600 homes. Dane County Executive Joe Parisi says the benefits are tri-fold: great for the environment, saves taxpayers money and creates jobs locally.

He says the county is working to encourage renewables and address climate change.

"We're not seeing a lot of that actions on the state and federal level. So while we're encouraging folks locally to get into renewables, in county government we need to do that for our own operations. And last year alone, we invested more than $2 million in solar project for Dane County government. So again, we're helping to reduce greenhouse and we're saving taxpayers dollars with those projects," said Parisi.

Parisi says over the next 6 weeks, companies will submit proposals to develop the project. This will be the 14th solar panel installation in Dane County.
