Marshall girls basketball makes long-awaited return to State

MARSHALL (WKOW) -

The Marshall girls basketball team entered the season with very few expectations. The Cardinals had a first-year coach in Alex Koeller and a roster heavy on underclassmen.

"The first time I got to see them is in the summer league ball. I knew right then and there that this was a special group," Koeller recalls. "When we started in November, you could tell right away, this is a group that is going to do special things, and it showed."

Koeller quickly realized he had an unusually talented freshmen class. Mia Morel, Anna Lutz and Laura Nickel have led the Cardinals in scoring as freshmen.

"I feel like a lot of people doubted us because we were a young team," Lutz says.

Those freshmen quickly gelled with the returning varsity players. The result was a lot of wins. Marshall is 25-1 after punching a ticket to the state tournament for the first time 1977.

"I think everybody is beginning to realize that we deserve it, and we've put in the work," says senior Samira Arvin. "So, we should definitely be here."

Marshall is not only in the WIAA Division 3 semifinals, they are the favorites. The Cardinals drew the top seed in the semifinals. They'll host Wisconsin Dells on Thursday at 1:35 p.m. on WKOW.
