Madison City Council vote to phase out late-night food carts

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- City leaders voted on Tuesday night to phase out late-night food cart vending.

Food carts can currently serve from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. Thursday through Saturday. According to city officials, the purpose of the plan is to discourage intoxicated people from gathering around food carts and remaining downtown once bars close.

"I don't think that getting rid of the food carts will help the situation, you know. It sounds to me it's like putting a band-aid on a wound," said food cart owner Sean Lee. "It won't help the safety issues in the downtown area."

The phase out is schedule to be finished by Spring of 2023.
