FITCHBURG (WKOW) --- A fire in Fitchburg overnight Wednesday completely destroyed three vehicles. It happened in the parking lot of the New Fountains Apartments.

Benjamin Blunt was visiting his mother-in-law Wednesday night at the apartments complex. He said he checked on his van just before midnight and everything was OK.

“So I go in the house for about 15 -20 minutes. I come back outside and my van is smoked,” said Benjamin Blunt.

Blunt's van was one of several vehicles destroyed by a fire in the parking lot of the apartment complex on Williamsburg Way.

“Around midnight, we have received some calls about a vehicle fire in the new fountain area, right off of Williamburg Way. Upon arrival, we realized it was more than one vehicle involved,” said Fitchburg Fire Chief Joe Pulvermacher.

“So I go over there, it's a big old Dodge van, and I open up the side door to see where it's coming from. And the smoke just rush out at me,” Blunt said.

Jeff Thurner lives in the complex and witnessed the fire as it happened.

“It was the tires that were exploding off of these cars here. You can see them all,” Thurner said.

“Right now we have investigators working on the incident. we're trying to identify what may have contributed to the cause of the fire. One of the vehicles was removed because, as with any fire, you have evident. and that will help us determine maybe what contributed to the start of that fire,” Pulvermacher said.

But this just isn't a van for Blunt. But it's also his home.

“I go to my mom-in-laws house to go to sleep sometimes when it gets cold outside instead of sleeping in the van,” Blunt said.

Right now all that remains are shells of the vehicles that caught fire night. And with no van, Blunt isn't sure how he's going to provide for his family.

“I was supposed to start a job. I can't get to my work because my van gone. It's all the way in Sun Prairie. Ain't nobody going to give me a ride to Sun Prairie.”

Blunt said he was taken to the hospital overnight for smoke inhalation, but is OK. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.

FITCHBURG (WKOW) -- Several vehicles caught fire in the parking lot of an apartment complex early Thursday morning.

Officials say it's too early to tell whether the fire is suspicious.
