More charging stations needs as more electric cars hit streets

MADISON (WKOW) -- Electric cars are hitting the streets in record numbers across the U.S. and that means there is a need a for public and private charging stations.

According to a new report from the WISPIRG Foundation and Frontier Group, electric car sales has increased nationwide by 38% and another 32% in 2017. The report calls for local officials to increase the access to public charges stations and incentivize car parking and charging areas.

"Madison can expect to have about 9,000 electric cars on the road by 2030," Peter Skopec, WISPIRG Foundation. "That means that the city's going to have to install 280 new public and workplace charging stations over the next decade."

Popularity has increased as manufacturers launch more electric car models. GM plans to launch 20 electric models by 2023 while Ford has announced its goal to have 40 models by 2022. These cars are even earning acclaim from motor trend, which named the Chevy Bolt the 2017 car of the year.
