Monroe St. construction starts Monday

MADISON (WKOW) -- Road construction on Monroe Street in Madison starts Monday.

For some businesses in that area, the project could not have come at a worse time. With spring just around the corner, some business owners are worried that they'll see a decrease in sales during the 10 month project.

"Everybody's just like...what are you going to do, you know," said John Dunn, general manager of the Cat Cafe on Monroe Street. "You try to do as much marketing as you can. You try to get people here. Madison Metro is going to offer free bus rides on the weekends, but is it really going to help us? I mean, we're losing a lot of business during the week."

Metro Transit says it is not offering free rides on weekends. According to Metro spokesman Mick Rusch, the bus company is offering a special shuttle that offers a little bit of extra service in the area, but regular fares apply. Click here for details on the adjustments Metro Transit is making.

Construction is expected to last until mid-November. The work will be done between Odana/Nakoma roads and Regent Street. Monroe Street will be down to one eastbound lane (inbound toward downtown), affecting both car and pedestrian traffic.
