Clintonville couple charged with illegally selling cows

CLINTONVILLE (WKOW) -- A Wisconsin couple faces more than 20 years in prison for illegally selling hundreds of cows.

According to a federal indictment, Derek and Kaitryn Van Asten of Clintonville defrauded the government and two cattle-leasing operations, of more than $400,000.

Between 2014 and 2016, federal investigators say the couple committed 72 fraudulent sales of cattle for $411,000 and lied in bankruptcy court about the cattle transactions.

Court records show the couple obtained a series of farm service agency loans to buy hundreds cows for their dairy business, then sold the cows to commercial cattle buyers as their own property, without using the proceeds to buy replacement cows as required by the loan agreement.

The Van Astens trial is set for May 18.

The couple now lives in Rolfe, IA.
