MADISON (WAOW) -- It's championship Saturday at the 103rd annual Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Boys Basketball State Tournament March 17, 2018 at the Kohl Center on the campus of the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin.
The Division 4 title game features Marathon and Roncalli
Marathon leaned on a balanced scoring attack to lead the Red Raiders to a 61-38 win over Clear Lake in the semifinal.
The Red Raiders' attack led to a 28-22 halftime lead with scoring spread among six players. Nathan Stoffel had 7 in the first half, but
Carter Hanke and Cameron Schilling each added six.
The trend continued in the second half as Marathon slowly grew its lead on 18 total points by Stoffel, who consistently got to
the rim. Hanke also had 18 and Donavan Free added 8.
Third-seeded Marathon returns to the state tournament for the first time since 2011 and for the eighth time overall. The Red Raiders won the championship in that most recent appearance, and they had three straight Class C championships from 1975-77 to give them four State crowns overall.
In the other semifinal, Roncalli raced out to a 40-24 halftime lead and never looked back in a 82-48 win.
Pardeeville's 44 percent shooting percentage in the first half should have been enough to keep them in the game, but Roncalli's
7 for 12 three-point shooting proved difficult to overcome.
Roncalli finished with 13 for 22 three pointers.
Roncalli, which is making its second straight appearance and its seventh overall. In each of the Jets’ previous six experiences, they have fallen out of title contention in the semifinals.
They return to the tournament field following a 60-50 win over The Prairie School in the Waukesha South Sectional final. The Jets placed runner-up in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference standings this season behind co-champions New Holstein and Division 3 qualifier Valders.
