ROCK COUNTY (WKOW) -- A Janesville man died and a Milton woman and her two children were injured Wednesday in a two-vehicle crash at the Rock-Walworth county line.
Marcus Hawkinson, 40, Janesville was killed when the vehicle he was driving was struck by Cassandra Melvin, 26, of Milton about 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2018, according to a Walworth County Sheriff's Office news release.
The crash happened at the intersection of highways 11/14 and highways C/M at the Walworth-Rock county line, according to the Walworth County Sheriff's Office. Deputies, along with fire and rescue units, arrived on scene and found injured parties along with two vehicles that were severely damaged.
Preliminary investigation reveals a grey 2003 Chevy van driven by Hawkinson was eastbound on 11/14 when it was struck in the driver’s side by a 2014 black Jeep driven by Melvin. The black Jeep was southbound on County Highway M and was attempting to turn left onto eastbound 11/14 when it failed to yield the right of way from a posted stop sign.
Hawkinson was ejected from the vehicle and suffered critical injuries.
There were also two small children ages 5 and 6 in the Jeep and the occupants in the Jeep suffered minor injuries.
All involved were transported by ambulance to local hospitals. Despite life-saving efforts, Hawkinson was pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital in Janesville.
Highway 11/14 was closed for three hours while the crash was being investigated and cleaned up.
The crash remains under investigation by the Walworth County Sheriff's Office Crash Investigation Unit.
