Wayward embers ignite grass fire on Madison's west side

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison firefighters put out a grass fire on the city's west side Friday morning.

Around 10:40 a.m. firefighters say they responded to a fire along Shadow Ridge Trail. They say firefighters spoke with a resident who was burning a small pile of hay when a strong wind gust blew embers into a nearby open lot, which was covered with dry grass.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and mopped up the hot spots.

Madison fire reminds residents burning hay, grass clippings, brush and other yard wast is not permitted in the City of Madison. They say when burning clean, dry wood, the fire should be contained by a mesh shield or spark arrestor to prevent embers from blowing away and spreading fire.
