UPDATE (WKOW) -- Investigators aren't sure how a deadly crash happened just yet.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office says it's looking for witnesses to the crash on U.S. 51 near County Trunk Highway AB. It happened around 10:00 p.m. Monday.

They know two vehicles hit each other head-on. The driver of a 2008 Cadillac DTS, a 25-year-old Stoughton man, died at the scene. The driver of a 2003 GM Sierra K2500, a 22-year-old Stoughton man, was taken to the hospital with critical injuries. The sheriff's office says neither man was wearing a seatbelt.

Sheriff's investigators were on the scene until about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday trying to reconstruct what happened. At this point, a sergeant tells 27 News they don't know what caused the crash or which way each vehicle was traveling. They're asking any witnesses to give them a call at (608) 266-4948.
