Union Cab offers free rides to and from voting locations

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- The winter weather made for wet and sloppy conditions for some getting to the polls to cast their ballots. But for those who didn't want to venture out in the wintry mix, a cab company was there to help for free.

Union Cab calls it their "Democracy in Motion" program. Anyone who needs or wants a ride to and from their polling place can take one of their cabs, free of charge.

If you don't know where you should be voting, the dispatch team at Union Cab is also willing to look that up.

The company has given the free rides on election day since 2011 and it has cost them about $16,000 since then.

"Democracy is very important to us and one of the biggest parts of democracy is having a vote, and exercising your rights in our democracy. And some people cannot make it to the polls, and we just want to make sure they get that chance to exercise their rights as well," said Amy Bua, the president of the company.

During the general election in 2016, Union Cab gave more than 550 free rides to the polls. Drivers don't expect to beat that number Tuesday, but they admit, they've been quite busy all day.

The cab company will be taking calls for the free rides up until 8 p.m. when polls close.

Don't forget to tip your driver!
