Madison man nearly hit by gunfire while sleeping

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- A Madison man is lucky to be alive after a bullet came into his home while he was sleeping. The bullet hit the mattress he was sleeping on, coming within inches of him, police say.

The Madison Police Department says the shooting happened in the 2800 block of Coolidge Street around 11:20 p.m. Tuesday. Police say two units of a duplex were struck by gunfire, including a bullet that entered the bedroom of a 55-year-old man. Police say the round struck his mattress. The man was not injured.

Investigators do not believe the man was the target of the shooting. They also don't think anyone on his side of the duplex was involved in the violence.

A witness told police they saw a man dressed in dark clothing running from the area of the adjoining home just after the shots were fired. The suspect got into a dark car with tinted windows.

Investigators haven't determined who was being targeted. Police say there were many calls to 911 from people who heard multiple gunshots.
