Monroe man sentenced in game-day sexual assault

MADISON (WKOW) -- A Monroe man will not go to prison for the game-day sexual assault of a student. A judge ordered Zachary Vannatta to spend six months in a county jail as part of five years probation.

He must also get sex offender treatment, as well as treatment for alcoholism. The victim, a 19-year-old UW-Madison student at the time of the 2016 assault spoke at Wednesday's sentencing.

"I do not take lightly that I have irreversibly altered your life," said Vannatta. "I understand and bear the guilt of knowing that the emotional and physical pain I have cause are things you'll be afflicted by the rest of your life."

The assault happened at a tailgate style party just blocks from Camp Randall. A jury found Vannatta guilty of 2nd-degree sexual assault in February.
