MADISON (WKOW) -- She was one of several volunteers recognized throughout the year with a Jefferson Award, and now she'll be representing our area in our nation's capital.

The Jefferson Awards Banquet was held Wednesday night. It brought together all the winners throughout the past year. All of their stories aired on 27 News, but only one of the incredible volunteers could make it to the national awards.

Jen Roman was the winner on Wednesday. After spending decades serving on the Madison Fire Department, she opened CampHero. It's a camp that gives girls from kindergarten to 12th grade the hands-on experience in training as firefighters, EMTs and police officers.

"I imagine a beautiful world where we love and trust each other and are able to do that in our workplace and in our lives," Roman said after receiving the honor.

27 News anchor Amber Noggle emceed the event.

Roman will soon head to Washington, D.C. for the national awards.

Although she was the one selected from our community, she said it's moving to know she was surrounded by other giving people.

"I'm really proud of our community and I'm proud of our state and all of the people here who are working to make things better for others," she said.
