Gov. Walker signs dense breast notification law in hopes of protecting women

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- There's now a new mandate on breast cancer screening in Wisconsin that could lead to earlier detection of cancer.

Governor Scott Walker signed a bill into law that requires doctors to notify a woman if a test shows she has dense breast tissue.

Medical officials say it could help women who may be at risk of developing breast cancer.

A breast cancer survivor form the Fox Valley led the charge for the law.

"I found out that actually dense breast tissue can hide tumors and it actually is a risk factor for breast cancer.  I was never told this in all of the years I had been getting yearly mammograms. It's overwhelming to know that maybe we can save lives through this law," said Gail Zeamer.

Wisconsin joins more than 30 states nationwide in enacting a dense breast notification law.
