MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison police were searching for two teens Thursday morning after the stolen car they were driving crashed into a building near Fish Hatchery Road.

Police were called shortly before 8 a.m. to an apartment complex on Petra Place near Fish Hatchery and the Beltline for a report of a car versus building.

A resident told police that he had started his wife's SUV and was letting it warm up as he and the couple's children sat in his car doing the same.

He was keeping an eye on his wife's vehicle when two teens jumped into it and were about to take off.

The man told police he swung open one of the SUV's doors, which caused the thief behind the wheel to panic.

The teen hit the gas while the SUV was in reverse and the open door smacked the husband sending him to the pavement.

The SUV came to a sudden stop as it slammed into a nearby apartment building.

The back of mother's SUV crumpled and the building was damaged.

The teens took off sprinting in such haste, that the driver ran right out of one of his shoes and left his cell phone behind.

Both teens remain at large. The husband suffered scraped knees.
