Wisconsin signs three hockey players to NLI

Posted: Updated:

MADISON, Wis. – Three forwards have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Badgers this fall, Wisconsin men's hockey head coach Tony Granato announced on Wednesday.

The three include Roman Ahcan (Savage, Minnesota), Brock Caufield (Mosinee, Wisconsin) and Jack Gorniak (West Salem, Wisconsin). They are in addition to the student-athletes who signed in the early signing period in November. All commitments are contingent on admission into school.

"The guys who are coming in are culture guys," Granato said about the entire signing class. "They are guys the fans are going to identify with. They are hard-working guys and that comes out in their play. They are never going to cheat the Badger fans and their teammates.

"They also have unreal skill. They all have their skill in their own way. When you are talking four or five who will be NHL draft picks. Other guys who may not get drafted, but who are still going to find ways to play professional hockey. The one thing that is very consistent is they are all great character kids. They all have the ability to be leaders in their own way and a lot of these guys are leaders where they are at."

Roman Ahcan, 5-9, 161, F, L, Savage, Minn., Cedar Rapids Rough Riders (USHL)

Ahcan, whose brother Jack skates for St. Cloud State, currently dresses for Cedar Rapids of the USHL. Roman posted 15 goals and 38 points through 59 games this season. Last season playing for Burnsville High School, he scored 18 goals and 51 points in 27 games played, while also skating in a dozen games for the NAHL's Brookings Blizzard.

Brock Caufield, 5-9, 168, F, R, Mosinee, Wis., Green Bay Gamblers (USHL)

Caufield is in his second full season playing with the USHL's Green Bay Gamblers. Through 60 regular season games, he posted 18 goals and 40 points. He had seven goals and 17 points in 57 games during his first full season with Green Bay in 2016-17. In the past, Caufield skated for Stevens Point Area High School, as well as Team Wisconsin.

Jack Gorniak, 5-11, 177, F, L, West Salem, Wis., West Salem H.S./Lincoln Stars (USHL)

The 2018 Wisconsin Mr. Hockey playing for West Salem/Bangor, Gorniak posted 31 goals, including seven game-winning markers, and 61 points to help the squad to the 2018 WIAA State Tournament. That helped earn him recognition on the USA Today All-USA Hockey first team.

He posted 33 goals and 71 points in 26 games as a junior when he was named first-team all-state by the Wisconsin Hockey Coaches Association. The year prior, Gorniak garnered honorable mention accolades.

Gorniak also skated for Team Wisconsin over the years, and skated a pair of games for the USHL's Lincoln Stars this season.

He checks in at No. 87 among North American skaters in NHL Central Scouting's final rankings.
