FAA inspectors complete investigation of small plane crash in Lafayette County

DARLINGTON (WKOW) -- Lafayette County Sheriff Reg Gill says the small aircraft that made an emergency landing Friday evening will soon be partially taken apart and removed from the scene.

In a news release Sunday, the sheriff says the airplane, a 1976 Beechcraft single engine, fixed wing aircraft, was piloted by Thomas Michael Buchberger, 49, of Plainfield.

Buchberger told authorities he was traveling from Oklahoma to Stevens Point when the plane's engine failed. He successfully performed an emergency landing in field near the intersection of County Road W and Dimmicks Road around 7:30 p.m.

Buchberger wasn't hurt and the plane had minimal damage.

Sheriff Gill says Federal Aviation Administration inspectors were on scene for a short time on Saturday and their investigation now has been completed. The insurance company for the aircraft has made arrangements for it to be partially dismantled on scene and then taken away.

Officials from both Jo Daviess County, Illinois and deputies from Lafayette County responded to the emergency landing.
