'Bucky on Parade' takes over Madison

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- You may see more of Bucky Badger throughout the Madison area.

'Bucky on Parade' is a public art event. Eighty-five life-sized Bucky Badger statues are on display throughout Madison and even as far as Sun Prairie and Fitchburg.

Sixty-four local and regional artists took a 6 foot tall, 160 pound plank fiberglass Bucky canvass and turned it into something totally unique.

"I think the main thing I like about them is they're all done by local artists which is super cool and they're all so different," said Maren Anderson, a UW-Madison senior walking down State Street.

Some of the statues are themed based on their sponsors, but all are changing up the landscape of the Madison area. Even busy UW-Madison seniors preparing for graduation had a reason to stop and look around.

"It's kinda nice to see something new down State Street," said UW-Madison senior Taylor Tatro.

It's also one more thing to get a picture with before they pack their bags.

"I want to find the graduation Bucky because we're graduating, obviously," said Anderson. "But I'm pretty sure I know where he is."

Carol and Stuart Martell even broke out their bikes so they can find as many Buckys as possible.

"We've been waiting for them," said Carol Martell. "We saw the article in the paper a couple weeks ago and it's such a fantastic event. We're having a great time."

Some people are even finding deeper meanings to the fun statues.

"I think it gives aspect and feature to every program we have at the college here in Madison because it's not just about sports here," said Kylie Chartre. "Everything is important to Badgers."

The Bucky statues will stay on display until September 12, 2018. After that, the sponsored statues will go to their sponsors.

About 30 will be auctioned off at the Red Party on September 29, 2018.

The money from the auction will go to the Garding Against Cancer foundation and the Madison Area Sports Commission.
