Three things to remember before you go biking

MADISON (WKOW) -- Chances are, you've already gotten on your bike this spring, but it's not too late for some reminders about safety.

Christy Griesheimer with Pacific Cycle is an analyst for Schwinn and Mongoose. She wants cyclists to remember at least these three main things:


  • Lights are vital for bike safety as they help you be seen and see better
  • Attach lights to the front and back of your bike and have them on whenever you ride
  • A higher-powered light is essential for dusk or nighttime biking; add that to the two you’ve used for daytime


  • You can also attach a red light to the back of your helmet or get a helmet with a built-in light
  • Wear bright clothing or a neon vest


  • Unlike a car, you don’t have built-in blinkers so you have to be your own blinker
  • Two types of signals you need to know: turning and stopping
  • For left turns extend your left arm out sideways, palm open with all fingers extended, or use your index finger to point left
  • For right turns, extend your left arm out sideways, bent at a 90-degree angle, palm open like a high five, or use your right index finger to point right
  • For stopping or slowing extend your left arm sideways, bent at 90 degrees, palm open and fingers pointing down
  • Remember to hold your signals for a few seconds to be sure that they are seen by surrounding traffic

May is Bike Month and Pacific Cycle is celebrating all month long. It will have a booth May 16 from 6:30 - 8:00 a.m. with free donuts and coffee at the bottom of the pedestrian bridge on Hammersley Road.
