Mysterious odor forces flight to Madison to turn around

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- American Airlines confirms to 27 News a flight to Madison Wednesday afternoon had to turn around and go back to Chicago after people on the plane noticed an odor in the cabin and cockpit.

An American Airlines representative tells us it was American Eagle flight 3994, operated by Envoy Air. The flight was scheduled to land in Madison around 2:30 p.m., but it was sent back to O'Hare Airport in Chicago and landed there at 2:17 p.m.

A passenger on the flight says there was a smokey smell. Photos sent to us by that passenger show what appears to be fire personnel outside the plane and in a jetway once the plane was back on the ground in Chicago.

The passengers were put on another plane and eventually made it to Madison sometime after 5:00 p.m.

The airline rep tells us a maintenance team is inspecting the plane.
