#BlackandHooded goes viral on social media

MADISON (WKOW) -- A pair of UW-Madison alumni are hoping this year's graduates take part in a social media movement that highlights the work it takes to get a diploma.

#BlackandHooded is a social media hashtag that black student graduates are using when they post a photo of themselves in their graduate garb. Anthony Wright and Brian Allen started it last year when they received their master's degrees. Now many others are posting their snapshots on Instagram.

The group acts as a communication platform for black students who are sometimes the only ones in the program at their school. It helps them connect with others like them at other universities.

They've launched a scholarship effort. We spoke with Natalie Reid, one of the recipients last Fall.

"To not have that community or that type of support within my department has really been a struggle," said Reid. "If you don't have a mentor or something like that to tell you how things go or what to do, what not to do then having a social media platform and this social media community with shared experiences is really useful."

The hashtag has already been used more than 10,000 times across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
