MADISON (WKOW) -- Thousands of people took to State Street and Gilman Street in downtown Madison Thursday evening for the Madison Night Market.

The Night Market started last year, and held its first event of the 2018 season.

Visitors could browse selections from more than 100 vendors and hear music from various artists and DJs. Graduates participated in free cap decorating at University Book Store. Some local businesses also stayed open late for the night to cash in on the extra foot traffic.

Organizers say events like these can make or break local artists.

"The more we work with these artisans, the more we hear that they need these types of markets to succeed," said Tiffany Kenney, Executive Director of Madison's Central Business Improvement District, the group that holds the Market. "We're excited to bring the customers to them."

Hungry visitors could also choose from a wide variety of food carts and pop-up restaurants.

The Night Market will come back to downtown Madison the second Thursday of June, August and September and will feature different vendors, food and entertainment.
