GREEN BAY (WBAY) -- Governor Scott Walker asked the Natural Resource Board to purchase more public land for hunting and fishing.

He asked the board to purchase more than 21 thousand acres in Sawyer County. Right now, the public has access to 7.4 million acres of land for outdoor recreation.

Walker told members of the 84th Convention of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress he hopes the land will give outdoor enthusiasts greater access to wildlife as it's home to deer, black bears, wolves, bobcats and several trout streams.

""It would just be one more step to make sure we have public land available for hunting, fishing, for trapping," he said. "People can have access, not only to their own lands if they have them, so that more people can get access to lands across the state of Wisconsin."

The Natural Resources Board will take up the proposal later this month. If approved, it will be sent o to the Joint Finance Committee for review.
