Billboards target mental health stigmas in Dane County

Posted: Updated:

DANE COUNTY (WKOW) -- New billboards are popping up across Dane County sharing stories of people who live with mental illness.

The Journey Mental Health Center launched a new ad campaign to show people who have these disorders that they're not alone.

Journey will put up five new billboards, each of real people sharing their illness. The goal is to challenge negative stigmas associated with mental illness and encourage others who are suffering to seek treatment.

"[The people on the billboards] live with mental illness or addiction, but they are more than that," said Journey Mental Health Center volunteer Jenny King. "They're a mother, an artist, a pastry chef, a lawyer."

The campaign is a part of mental health awareness month but the billboards will stay up for the next year.
