MADISON (WKOW) -- People from across the Midwest were in Madison Saturday for the 2nd annual Isthmus Instruments Midwest Handpan Gathering.

The handpan is a musical instrument created in the early 2000's in Switzerland. It's two metal, hard shells glued together. The original instrument was called a hang.

People gathered Saturday at the Goodman Community Center for workshops and a chance to play together.

"In my life, I've never discovered anything that had such a power to connect people in such a positive way," said Jeremy Arndt, a handpan musician from Michigan. "I've met friends all over the world through playing this instrument."

There are less than 20 handpan makers in the U.S. Isthmus Instruments in Madison is the only one in Wisconsin.
