Stamp Out Hunger campaign supports Wisconsin food pantries

WISCONSIN (WKOW) -- People were stamping out hunger with small donations across Wisconsin on Saturday.

Letter carriers all over the country collected non-perishable items that many people left by their mailboxes. The goal is to make significant donations of food to organizations serving people in need.

The drive brought in 148,448 pounds of food in 2017 for the Community Action Coalition for South Central Wisconsin in Dane County. CAC distributes three million pounds of food to more than 90 food pantries, meal sites and shelters in Dane, Jefferson and Waukesha counties.

This year, Milwaukee's Stamp Out Hunger partnered with the Hunger Task Force. They focused on asking people to donate healthy food.

"People care about other people. They pay attention to what's going on with their neighbor. Children donating to help other children. It's really, very heartwarming," said Sherrie Tussler, with the task force.

This is the 26th year for the national event. The Hunger Task Force serves 74 food pantries, soup kitchens and homeless shelters.
