No threat at UW-Whitewater after technical issue with alert system

WHITEWATER (WKOW) -- Officials at UW-Whitewater say there is no threat on campus, after a technical issue with an alert system.

The university posted a large message on its website Sunday around 3:15 p.m. to tell people there is no threat to life or safety at this time. Officials say there was a technical issue with the system and they will release more information later.

An email shared with WKOW-TV shows students received a message from UW-W's emergency alert system at 3:11 p.m. that said:
"There is an active threat to life safety on campus, RUN, HIDE, FIGHT!"

Max Larson barricaded his dorm door when he got the alert.

"The first command it gave was run, hide, fight. I'm on the ninth floor, so I think running was out. So, my next option is basically to hide and hope that whatever the life threat was would not end up at my door," said Larson.

A while later, an email came to students from UW-W's police chief saying there was a technical issue with the emergency warning system that send out the threat message. Chief Matt Kiederlen says there was no threat to the campus and this will be investigated.

"We will continue to investigate what happened and provide further information as it becomes available. We apologize for any undo stress this may have caused," he said in the email to students.
